Check hats for small life forms before wearing in Hawaii

You feel cute in your hat, and protected from the powerful sun.

If you only *think* something is crawling on your head, it is not. When there really are tiny feet on your scalp , you *know* it. And–off with the hat!

You take a closer look at the hat, which you flung a couple of feet away.

With gratitude you see it is only a gecko. Or perhaps it is more appropriate to call this creature a tiny chameleon. It is not a hand-sized cane spider, or a centipede. The feet had not felt that big, so you were only a bit concerned.

The lesson: in this tropical paradise, before putting a hat on your head, or bringing a flower to your nose, check for life forms. We do not have poisonous animals indigenous to Hawaii, but you could be mighty startled if you fail to look first!
